Mansinam Island

Mansinam Island sits a short boat ride from Manokwari's harbour — about 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat — and is the historical birthplace of Christianity in Papua. The missionaries Ottow and Geissler set up their mission here in 1855, and the island has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. A large statue of Jesus stands near the shore, visible from the mainland on clear days.

The island itself is small and peaceful. Beyond its religious significance, the surrounding waters are clear and good for snorkelling. Local boatmen at the harbour will take visitors across; agree on a price before you leave and arrange a pickup time. The island is busiest around 5 February when thousands of pilgrims arrive for anniversary celebrations.

A story
On 5 February 1855, German missionaries Carl Wilhelm Ottow and Johann Gottlob Geissler landed on Mansinam Island — the first Christian missionaries to reach Papua. The date is still celebrated as a public holiday in West Papua province, and Rendani Airport may soon be renamed Ottow–Geissler Airport in their honour.
