Manokwari

West Papua bay city backed by forested hills at the edge of the Bird's Head Peninsula.

Manokwari is the capital of West Papua province, set on a bay surrounded by forested hills at the northern edge of the Bird's Head Peninsula. It is a small, pleasant city that sees few tourists but rewards those who come.

The main attraction near town is Gunung Meja Nature Reserve, a forested hill with trails and views over the city and bay. Amban Beach is a short ride from the centre. For a longer trip, the twin Anggi Lakes sit high in the Arfak Mountains to the south, surrounded by cool cloud forest — a striking contrast to the tropical coast.

Manokwari has historical significance as the place where Christianity was first introduced to Papua, in 1855, via Mansinam Island just offshore. The island is still a pilgrimage site and easy to reach by boat from the harbour.

Getting Around

Manokwari is small enough to walk around the city centre, but ojeks (motorcycle taxis) are the quickest way to reach beaches, the university area, and the foot of Gunung Meja. Agree on the price before you get on — short trips around town cost a few thousand rupiah. Minibuses (angkot) run fixed routes along the main roads and are very cheap. For the Arfak Mountains or Anggi Lakes, you'll need to hire a vehicle with driver; ask at your accommodation or around the port area.

Speedboats to Mansinam Island and other bay islands depart from the main harbour. Negotiate prices with the boatmen directly and agree on a return time.
