PLTD Apung 1

PLTD Apung 1 is a huge power-generation barge stranded in the city, far from the water where it belongs. It is less polished than the Tsunami Museum and in some ways more affecting: the scale of the vessel makes the tsunami's force immediately understandable.

The site has been turned into a small memorial park with explanatory panels and viewpoints. Go early or late in the day, when the metal deck is less punishingly hot. It combines well with the nearby residential tsunami markers and the western side of town.

A story
PLTD Apung 1 was a floating diesel power station before the tsunami. The wave carried the 2,600-ton vessel several kilometres inland and left it in a residential neighbourhood, where it now stands as one of the clearest physical measures of the water's force.
