Bukit Besar — "big hill" — is a modest elevation by any measure, but it rises above the flat coastal plain of Pangkalpinang enough to give a decent panorama over the city and the strait beyond. A small park sits at the top, popular with locals for morning exercise and with anyone wanting a quick overview of the island's capital and its coastal setting.
The view is best in the early morning before haze settles in. It's an easy drive or motorbike ride from the city centre, and the park is well maintained. Nothing spectacular, but a useful orientation — you can see at a glance how Pangkalpinang sits between the sea to the east and the forested interior to the west, and why tin and fishing shaped the place in equal measure.
