Bangka's beaches are its best argument for a visit. The water is clear and calm — the island sits in the protected Java Sea, not exposed to Indian Ocean swells — and the sand is generally clean and white. Most beaches are scattered up the northeast coast near Sungailiat, about an hour's drive from Pangkalpinang. The standout feature of many Bangka beaches is the dramatic granite boulders that emerge from the sand and water, some as big as houses, smoothed by millions of years of weathering. They make for good photos and good shade.
Crowds are manageable. Bangka is well known to Jakartans and Batam residents looking for a quick getaway, so the popular resorts fill up on weekends and during Indonesian public holidays — but midweek, even the famous beaches feel quiet by Southeast Asian standards.
