When to Go

Bukit Lawang sits in North Sumatra's wet tropics and receives rain throughout the year, but the drier months from May to September are the most comfortable time to visit. Trails are less slippery, the river is better for tubing, and the forest canopy is more navigable. That said, even in the wet season (October to April) treks go ahead — the forest is lusher, and heavy rain often brings orangutans closer to the trail edges in search of food.

Temperatures sit around 28–32°C year-round. Humidity is always high. Bring waterproof gear regardless of when you visit; afternoon downpours can materialize quickly even in the dry season.

The village is busiest during Indonesian school holidays (June–July, December–January) and around the Easter break, when domestic tourism picks up. Visiting outside these windows means quieter trails and more flexibility with guides.
