The 26-metre tower at the centre of Bukittinggi was built in 1926 by the Dutch as a gift to the city secretary, and it has been the town's symbol ever since. The clockwork was made by the same firm as Big Ben in London and is wound by hand. The plaza around it, Taman Jam Gadang, is the social heart of Bukittinggi — packed every evening with families, students, and street-food vendors.
It is small as landmarks go, but it tells the story of the city in three regimes. Climb the steps for the view down Jalan Sudirman to the volcanoes; come back at dusk when the tower lights up and the square fills with food carts selling sate Padang and grilled corn.
