Medan is served by Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), about 40 kilometres southeast of the city centre. The airport has domestic flights to most major Indonesian cities, and international connections to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Penang. The Railink airport train connects Kualanamu directly to Medan's main railway station in about 35 minutes; taxis and ride-share services (Grab) are also available.
From Penang (Malaysia), a ferry runs across the Strait of Malacca to Belawan port, north of Medan — a popular cross-border route for travellers moving between Malaysia and Sumatra. From Belawan, taxis and local transport run into the city centre.
