Tjong A Fie Mansion

The opulent Sino-Portuguese mansion of Medan's most powerful 19th-century Chinese merchant, now a museum

The Tjong A Fie Mansion is the most impressive private house in Medan — a large Sino-Portuguese two-storey building on Jalan Ahmad Yani, built in 1900 for Tjong A Fie, the Hakka Chinese merchant who became the most powerful man in colonial Medan. The building's interior is remarkably well-preserved: carved wooden screens, Delft tile floors, European furniture, and family portraits record the life of a man who moved comfortably between Chinese, Malay, and Dutch worlds.

The mansion is now run as a museum by the Tjong A Fie family foundation. Guided tours (in English) are available and are highly recommended — the guides bring the building's history to life with stories of the plantation economy, the colonial administration, and the Tjong family's philanthropy. The rooftop terrace has views over the neighbourhood. Open daily except Mondays.

A story
Tjong A Fie arrived in Medan from China in 1875 with almost nothing and died in 1921 as one of the wealthiest men in Southeast Asia, controlling much of the city's land and the Medan-Belawan railway. He built this mansion in 1900 and maintained Chinese, Malay, and Dutch social circles simultaneously — a remarkable feat in colonial Sumatra.
