Getting Around

A scooter or motorbike is the ideal way to explore Samosir. Hire is available at Tuk Tuk and Tomok; rates are low and the process informal. The main road around the island's perimeter is paved and in reasonable condition, and the circuit — roughly 80 kilometres — can be done in a day at a relaxed pace with stops at Simanindo, Pangururan, and the interior plateau.

Bicycles are also available for hire at Tuk Tuk, suitable for the flat stretch along the eastern shore between Tuk Tuk, Tomok, and Ambarita. The hills in the interior and the northern section of the island are better handled by motorbike.

Ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers operate throughout the island and are the fall-back option if you prefer not to drive yourself. Agree the price before getting on.
