Dizin Ski Resort

Dizin is the largest and most developed ski resort in Iran — and by extension in the Middle East — located in the Alborz mountains about 120 kilometres north of Tehran, with skiing at altitudes between 2,650 and 3,600 metres. The snow quality from December to May is reliably excellent: dry powder conditions similar to Colorado or the high Swiss Alps, with a season that extends into April in good years.

Getting there from Tehran takes about three hours by road through the Chalus pass, which is itself a spectacular mountain drive. The resort has several hotels, ski rental facilities, and a cable car network of around 45 lifts. For experienced skiers visiting Iran, Dizin is a genuine destination rather than just a curiosity — the long runs on uncrowded pistes, the mountain scenery, and the cultural novelty of skiing in Iran combine into an experience unlike anywhere else.

A story
Dizin was developed in the late 1960s as part of Mohammad Reza Shah's programme to modernise Iran, partly inspired by the notion that a Muslim country skiing under their own mountains would be a powerful image of development. Austrian and French ski companies were brought in to design and install the lifts. After the 1979 revolution the resort was nationalised; it continued to operate, but mixed-sex skiing was prohibited. The rules have varied since then. Currently, men and women ski the same runs but are required to follow Islamic dress codes, which in practice means most women ski in headscarves and fitted ski suits.
