The Tehran War Cemetery is a small Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in the Gholhak district of northern Tehran, containing the graves of 2,082 servicemen from the two World Wars, predominantly from the Second World War. British, Indian, Australian, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth soldiers are buried here alongside a smaller number of Polish and other Allied forces.
The cemetery is meticulously maintained in the CWGC tradition — white Portland stone headstones in precise rows, immaculate lawns, and the Cross of Sacrifice at the centre. It is a striking sight in northern Tehran: the formal English garden aesthetic entirely preserved, unchanged in its essentials since the 1940s, surrounded by the noise and density of a modern Iranian city. A peaceful and moving place to visit, particularly for anyone from Commonwealth countries.
