Adjacent to the Great Mosque of Kufa, this small but elegant shrine contains the tomb of Muslim ibn Aqeel, cousin and emissary of Imam Husayn, who was sent to Kufa in 680 to rally support before the battle of Karbala. He was betrayed and executed by the local governor, an event remembered every year during the Shia mourning of Muharram.
The shrine has a tiled blue dome, a small courtyard, and a silver-grilled zarih around the tomb. It is usually less crowded than the great shrines in Najaf and Karbala and gives a quieter setting in which to watch the rituals of Shia pilgrimage.
