Najaf is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, and most of its sights are religious. The shrine of Imam Ali dominates the old city, and the vast cemetery of Wadi al-Salaam stretches west of town. Pilgrims, seminarians and visitors share the same dusty streets around the Old Bazaar.
