St. Joseph's Cathedral is one of Erbil's main Christian landmarks, built between 1978 and 1981 by volunteers from the local community. Its most distinctive feature is the Babylonian-inspired entrance, modelled on the Ishtar Gate.
The cathedral has a large yard and gardens, and is most interesting as a reminder of the city's Assyrian and Chaldean Christian communities alongside Erbil's better-known Kurdish and Islamic heritage.
