Air. Duhok itself has no commercial airport. The nearest is Erbil (EBL), three hours south by road, with frequent flights from Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Mosul Airport reopened to limited service in 2023 and may be closer for some travellers; check current security advice.
Land. Most independent travellers arrive by shared taxi from Erbil (around 3 hours) or by minibus from Zakho on the Turkish border (1 hour). The Ibrahim Khalil border crossing into Turkey is open to road traffic; on the Turkish side, frequent buses run from Silopi to Cizre, Diyarbakir, and Istanbul. Citizens of most Western countries get a free 30-day Kurdistan Region visa on arrival at Erbil airport or the land borders; this is separate from a federal Iraqi visa and does not allow travel south of the Kurdistan Region.
