Duhok itself is mostly a base. The pleasures are the bazaar, the lake at the dam, and the dramatic Zagros scenery within an hour's drive — particularly Amadiya, the cliff-top town to the northeast, and the rock reliefs at Halamata. Plan around the heat in summer and the muddy roads in winter.
