Mitzpe Ramon

Negev rim town above Makhtesh Ramon, with desert views, hikes, and night skies.

Mitzpe Ramon sits on the northern rim of Makhtesh Ramon, the huge erosion crater that makes this part of the Negev feel almost lunar. The town began as a remote development settlement, and some of that rough edge remains, but the setting is extraordinary: cliffs, ibex on the promenade, desert light, and a night sky that still feels properly dark.

The first stop is the Ramon Visitors Center, which explains the geology before you step out to the crater rim promenade. From there, hiking routes descend into the makhtesh, jeep tracks cross the crater floor, and the Ramon Crater Dark Sky Park makes night a reason to stay rather than leave.

Mitzpe Ramon is not just a viewpoint. It is the practical base for the central Negev highlands, with desert guides, galleries, simple food, and enough silence around the edges to make a spare day feel well spent.
