Magdala

Magdala, a few kilometres north of Tiberias, was an ancient lakeside town and is traditionally associated with Mary Magdalene. Excavations have revealed streets, ritual baths, market areas, and a remarkable first-century synagogue.

The site is well presented and easy to combine with other stops around the north-western Sea of Galilee. It gives Tiberias visitors a stronger sense of the Jewish Galilee that existed before and during the early Roman period.

A story
Archaeologists at Magdala uncovered a first-century synagogue with a carved stone that may have represented the Temple in Jerusalem. That discovery changed how scholars think about synagogue life in Galilee before the destruction of the Temple.
