Gandate Canyon is a volcanic gorge centred on Mount Gandate, a sheer rock face formed by an eruption of Mount Ontake more than 50,000 years ago. The area is protected as one of Gifu's natural monuments and is especially attractive in autumn.
A short walking path follows the river to the Osaka Falls, making this a manageable nature excursion from Gero rather than a full mountain hike.
