Hida Tōshō-gū

Small Shinto shrine dedicated to the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu

A small Shinto shrine on the western edge of town, founded in 1619 in honour of the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu — one of many provincial Tōshō-gū shrines copying the famous one at Nikkō. The carved gate and the lacquered woodwork are typical Tōshō-gū flamboyance on a quietly provincial scale.

The shrine is rarely visited and gives a peaceful break from the busier old town. Hidden behind the shrine, the wooded slope of Shiroyama drops down toward the river.
