Takayama is a town of sake breweries — six of them, all in the Sanmachi quarter, all offering tastings. Cafes are mostly tucked into machiya merchant houses with tatami rooms and small inner courtyards. Nightlife is quiet by Japanese standards; most bars close by midnight.
