The larger of Takayama's two daily morning markets runs along the east bank of the Miyagawa river, just north of the old town, from around 7am until noon every day of the year. Local farmers sell pickles, mountain vegetables, miso and dried persimmons; a separate line of stalls sells crafts, sarubobo dolls and ceramics.
It is more lively and more touristy than the smaller Jin'ya-mae market across town. Come at opening time for the genuine farmers' end of it. Free coffee is occasionally pressed on visitors by the older sellers.
