Getting Around

Hiroshima runs one of Japan's few surviving urban tram networks, and it is the best way to get around. Five lines fan out from the area in front of Hiroshima Station, making announcements in English as well as Japanese. A single ride anywhere in the central zone costs ¥190; day passes (¥700) are worth buying if you plan more than four journeys. Trams run from around 6:00 to 23:00.

For the Peace Park and A-Bomb Dome, take Line 2 or 6 to Genbaku Dome-mae station — the tram stop is named for the dome. Shukkei-en is served by Shukkeien-mae on Line 9. For the castle, Kamiyachō is the nearest stop.

To reach Miyajima, take Line 2 from Hiroshima Station all the way to Hiroden-miyajimaguchi (about 65 minutes), then the ferry. A visitor pass covering unlimited trams and the Miyajima ferry is available for ¥1,000 (2-day pass ¥1,400) and sold at the tourist information office in the station.

Walking between Peace Park, the castle, and Shukkei-en is feasible on a single morning if you are not stopping too long at each — they are within about 1.5km of each other. The city centre is flat and easy to navigate on foot.
