Toshogu Shrine

Hillside Edo-period shrine near Hiroshima Station with city views and a quieter approach

Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine sits on the slopes north of the station, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and reached by a climb that quickly leaves the transport hub behind. The shrine buildings are attractive, but the approach and the change of pace are the real draw.

It is a good stop if you are staying near the station or want something quieter than the Peace Park and castle circuit. The hillside position gives glimpses back over the city, and the shrine connects Hiroshima to the broader Edo-period network of Toshogu sites across Japan.
