Gakuen-ji is a mountain temple in the Izumo area, set away from the city’s better-known shrine circuit. The approach through forest is a large part of the experience, with stone steps, moss, and a quieter mood than the busy precincts around Izumo Taisha.
It is best for travellers who have extra time or a car, and who like temples that feel embedded in the landscape. Do not expect the grandeur of Izumo Taisha; Gakuen-ji is smaller, more contemplative, and more rewarding when taken slowly.
