Tachikue Gorge is a narrow river gorge south of Izumo, where steep rock walls, forest, and water create one of the area's more dramatic natural walks. The gorge is also dotted with Buddhist stone figures, so the experience shifts between landscape and quiet religious imagery.
It is a worthwhile change of pace from Izumo Taisha and the coast. Trails and viewpoints let you keep the visit relatively short, but the setting rewards unhurried walking, especially when the river is full or the leaves are turning.
