Hinomisaki Shrine stands on the same headland as Hinomisaki Lighthouse, its vermilion halls bright against the dark pines and Sea of Japan. The shrine is linked to Amaterasu and Susanoo, which makes it a natural extension of Izumo's mythological landscape rather than just a pretty coastal stop.
The best visit combines the shrine, the lighthouse, and the rocky shore in one slow loop. Buses from Izumo Taisha make the headland possible without a car, though a car gives you more time for sunset and the sea cliffs. Compared with Izumo Taisha, Hinomisaki is smaller and quieter, but the setting is superb.
