Iwami Ginzan

UNESCO silver-mining landscape of forested shafts, Omori town, temples, and old transport routes.

Iwami Ginzan is the reason Oda belongs on a travel map. The mines worked from the sixteenth century into the twentieth, and the UNESCO listing covers not just shafts but the surrounding settlements, routes, and port towns that moved silver out to the coast. Start at the World Heritage Center for context, then continue into Omori, where old houses, stone walls, and wooded lanes make the mining boom feel less abstract.

Ryugenji Mabu is the most accessible mine shaft for independent visitors, while Okubo Mabu gives a deeper guided look when tours are running. The best part is the way industry and forest sit together: tunnels in the hillside, small temples, and a town that feels more lived-in than staged.
