Okayama Castle

Okayama Castle stands on the east side of the city centre, facing Korakuen across the Asahi River. Its black cladding makes it look more severe than many Japanese castles, especially when seen from the garden side.

The keep is reconstructed, so come for the view, the exterior, and the way the castle anchors the riverfront rather than expecting untouched 17th-century interiors. It is best paired with Korakuen; do both in one unhurried loop.

A story
The castle's black exterior earned it the nickname U-jo, or Crow Castle, in deliberate contrast to Himeji's white "Egret Castle." The current keep is a post-war reconstruction, but the silhouette still gives Okayama its sharpest skyline.
