Hakodate has one of Japan's few remaining tram systems, and it is genuinely useful for tourists. Two lines converge at Hakodate Station and run west to the Motomachi and Kanemori waterfront area (Suehirocho or Jujigai stops) and east to Yunokawa Onsen (Yunokawa terminus). Single fares are inexpensive; a day pass is good value if you plan to use the trams more than three times.
The Motomachi district involves climbing slopes that are steep in places — comfortable walking shoes are advisable. The city centre and the area between the station, the morning market, and the Kanemori warehouses is very walkable. For Goryōkaku, the tram reaches Goryōkaku-koen-mae in about 10 minutes from the station. The Mount Hakodate ropeway is a 10-minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop. Taxis are readily available and metered. Rental bicycles are available near the station, though the terrain of Motomachi discourages cyclists.
