Late April to early May is the cherry blossom season at Goryōkaku, drawing large crowds but creating one of Hokkaido's finest spring scenes. Summer (July–August) is warm, clear, and the most popular tourist season; the night view from Mount Hakodate is best in the dry months when the air is clearest. Autumn (September–October) brings cooler temperatures and good visibility for the night view.
Winter (December–March) is cold, with significant snowfall, but Hakodate is well-equipped for winter visitors. The ropeway to Mount Hakodate continues to operate, and the combination of the city lights and snow below makes the night view arguably more dramatic than in summer. Yunokawa Onsen is most appealing in winter when the contrast between cold air and hot spring water is greatest. The Hakodate Christmas Fantasy event in December — featuring a large illuminated tree on the waterfront — draws domestic tourists.
