Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church

The Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church (locally called Haristosu Seikyokai) is the most distinctive building on the Motomachi slopes and one of Hakodate's best-known landmarks. The green Byzantine domes visible from the waterfront below mark a Russian Orthodox church that has stood on this site since 1859, when it was established to serve the Russian consulate community. The current building dates from 1916 after fire destroyed earlier structures; it is constructed in brick with the characteristic Russian Orthodox onion domes and crosses.

The interior is open to visitors during limited hours and contains a Russian icon screen of considerable quality. The church is still an active parish, and services are held on Sundays with a small congregation. Even outside visiting hours the exterior is worth the climb: the combination of the domes against the sky and the view down the slope to the bay below is one of Hakodate's most photographed sights. The church sits within a short walk of the Former British Consulate, the former French consulate, and several other Western-era buildings in the Motomachi district.
