Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses

The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses are a row of late 19th-century cargo warehouses on the Hakodate waterfront, now converted into a shopping and dining complex. The buildings date from 1909 and were used for storing goods passing through what was then Hokkaido's main trading port. The brick construction, deep-red colour, and waterfront setting give the complex a distinctly non-Japanese character — more Hamburg or Boston than traditional Japan — which is part of Hakodate's broader identity as a city shaped by foreign trade.

The complex houses restaurants, craft shops, and a branch of the Hakodate Beer brewery, which produces the city's own varieties on the premises. The beer hall inside the larger warehouse is a popular evening destination. The outdoor terrace facing the bay offers good views of the working port and, in the distance, the lit slopes of Mount Hakodate. The warehouses are a five-minute walk from the Suehirocho tram stop, making them easy to combine with the Motomachi slope district behind them.
