Cape Shiretoko Cruise

The coastline from Utoro to the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula is one of the most dramatic in Japan — sheer cliffs, sea caves, waterfalls dropping directly into the ocean, and the volcanic peaks rising behind. The only practical way to see this coastline is by sightseeing cruise from Utoro harbour. Several operators run tours of varying length: shorter cruises cover the accessible coastal section up to Kamuiwakka; longer voyages go to the cape itself.

On summer cruises, you'll typically see brown bears foraging on the coastal slopes, sea eagles overhead, and seals hauled out on rocks. The sea can be rough and boats may not always reach the cape, but the coastal cliffs alone make the trip worthwhile. In winter, special ice-breaking cruises observe drift ice from the Sea of Okhotsk — unique in Japan south of the Arctic Circle — and huge aggregations of Steller's sea eagles concentrated on the ice floes.

A story
The tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula — Cape Shiretoko — is inaccessible by road and can only be reached by boat or on a multi-day registered wilderness hike. The cape itself is at 44.3°N, roughly the same latitude as Geneva or Montreal, yet it has a subarctic character more reminiscent of Siberia. It sits just 25 kilometres from the Russian-administered Kunashir Island.
