Shionomisaki Lighthouse

Meiji-era lighthouse at Honshu's southern cape, with Pacific views and a strong end-of-island feeling.

Shionomisaki Lighthouse stands near the southernmost point of Honshu, where the Kii Peninsula faces straight into the Pacific. The lighthouse dates from the early Meiji period, when Japan was building modern navigation aids for ships entering the approaches to Osaka Bay.

Come for the sense of place as much as the building. The cape, the wind, and the open water make this feel like the edge of the main island.
