Maruyama Park is the most popular cherry-blossom park in central Kyoto, a long sloping grassy expanse spilling down the western foothills of the Higashiyama behind Yasaka Shrine. The centerpiece is the famous shidare-zakura — a giant weeping cherry tree that is illuminated each evening from late March into early April and around which the entire park's cherry-viewing season is structured.
For roughly two weeks in late March and early April, the park fills with hanami (cherry-viewing) parties in full evening swing — blue tarps spread out on the grass, food stalls set up around the central pond, sake and bento boxes consumed at sociable volume. In summer the park is a quiet, shaded transit route between Yasaka Shrine, Chion-in, and the upper Higashiyama temples. The teahouse on the small central island serves matcha in front of the pond all year.
