Bar Bunkichi

Tiny standing whisky bar on Gion's Kiyamachi canal, with an all-Japanese pour selection

Bunkichi is a standing bar seating perhaps twelve people on the east bank of the Kiyamachi canal, specialising in Japanese whisky by the glass. The selection covers the major distilleries -- Nikka, Suntory, Chichibu, Mars -- with a strong emphasis on limited and regional expressions. Prices are fair by Kyoto standards; the pours are honest.

The bar opens at 6 pm and fills quickly with a mix of locals and visitors; the standing format encourages conversation. No food is served beyond bar snacks. Located on the Kiyamachi strip that parallels the Takase canal south of Sanjo.
