Daitsu-ji Temple

A large Pure Land Buddhist temple whose main hall was relocated from Fushimi Castle in 1602, famous for autumn maples and spring wisteria.

Daitsu-ji (大通寺) is the largest Buddhist temple in Nagahama, belonging to the Jodo Shinshu (Pure Land) tradition of the Otani-ha school. Its imposing sanmon (main gate) is the first thing you see approaching from the old shopping street, and the scale of the complex inside is unexpectedly grand for a city of this size. The main hall dates from 1602 and was originally part of Fushimi Castle in Kyoto before being dismantled and moved to its present site.

The temple grounds are worth visiting year-round, but two seasons stand out. In late March and April the wisteria in the inner garden blooms in heavy purple cascades. In November the maple trees turn deep red, making the stone paths and old wooden structures genuinely beautiful in the low autumn light. Admission to the main hall and garden is charged; the outer grounds are free to walk through.
