Nagahama's eating scene is modest but honest. Soba noodles are the local staple, served in delicate dashi broth at traditional restaurants throughout the Kurokabe district. Street food around the old streets runs to yakitori skewers and grilled fish from Lake Biwa. The adventurous should seek out funazushi — fermented carp that has been pressed in salt and rice for up to five years. It is an acquired taste, but an undeniably local one.
