Day Trips

The classic day trip from Nagahama is out onto Lake Biwa itself. Ferries from Nagahama Port cross to Chikubu-shima, a tiny sacred island where a shrine and temple both over 1,400 years old cling to a steep wooded slope — a quiet, atmospheric half-day that pairs well with the lakeshore views back in town. Hikone, with its original castle, lies a short train ride south along the lake and makes an easy add-on if you want a second stop.
