A cluster of blocks west of the Shinsaibashi shopping arcade, known since the 1970s as the city's centre for streetwear, second-hand American clothing, vintage goods, and youth subculture. The name — 'American Village' — comes from the era when the area specialised in importing American surplus clothing; it has since diversified into all forms of youth retail and nightlife.
The neighbourhood centres on Triangle Park, a small concrete plaza that functions as a gathering point and informal performance space. The streets around it have independent boutiques, vintage shops, tattoo studios, record stores, and cafes. Busier on weekends when teenagers from across the Kansai region come to shop and hang around. The contrast with the more formal Shinsaibashi arcade a few hundred metres east is striking.
