Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

Japan's first museum dedicated to photography, with a 33,000-image permanent collection

Address 1-13-3 Mita, Meguro, Tokyo

Known as TOP Museum (and as "Syabi" until 2014), this was Japan's first museum dedicated specifically to photography and the moving image when it opened in a temporary building in 1990, moving into its current purpose-built home in Yebisu Garden Place in 1995. It was notable from the start for organising its collection thematically rather than around single photographers, a departure from the prevailing model in Japan at the time.

The permanent collection holds more than 33,000 photographs, Japanese and international, supplemented by rotating exhibitions of contemporary and historical work. A serious cultural stop that fits Ebisu's understated, grown-up character — easy to combine with the Yebisu Beer Museum nearby.
