Yamate is Yokohama's old foreign-residential hill, a quieter district of bluff-top streets, preserved Western-style houses, churches, gardens, and views toward the harbour. It tells the story of the treaty-port years in a more walkable and atmospheric way than a single museum could.
The best approach is on foot from Motomachi or the waterfront, linking the former residences with Harbor View Park and the cemetery. It is polished but not sterile, and it makes a good counterweight to Minato Mirai's towers and the bustle of Chinatown.
