Beppu Beach Sand Bath

Beppu Beach Sand Bath sits on the city's waterfront and offers the more scenic version of the sand bath experience compared to Takegawara. Attendants bury you in naturally geothermally heated black sand beside the sea, with views of Beppu Bay. The sand temperature is regulated by the depth of burial, and the treatment lasts about 10 to 15 minutes before the heat becomes too intense.

The beachside setting makes this the more pleasant of the two main sand bath options, though it is also more exposed to weather. Yukata (light cotton robes) are provided. The combination of sea views, fresh air, and volcanic heat is a particularly Beppu experience that visitors seeking something different from the standard hot spring pools should try. The adjacent facility also has conventional indoor baths.

A story
The sand on this beach is naturally heated from below by geothermal activity to around 50–55°C. Attendants test the temperature each morning and adjust the depth at which bathers are buried accordingly. The experience of lying on what looks like a normal beach while being cooked from underneath by volcanic heat is uniquely Beppu.
