Beppu's defining experience is its onsen — the city sits above one of the most geothermally active areas on earth and produces more hot spring water than anywhere in Japan. The famous "hells" (jigoku) are a circuit of spectacular boiling springs not for bathing but for viewing. Kannawa is the most atmospheric of the onsen districts, with steam rising from vents in the ground and traditional bathhouses on every street.
