Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel

The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel runs 780 metres under the Kanmon Strait, connecting Moji in Kitakyushu with Shimonoseki on Honshu. The crossing takes about 15 minutes on foot and costs almost nothing — a small toll for pedestrians, free for cyclists who walk their bikes. It is one of very few places in the world where you can walk between major islands.

The tunnel is well-lit and maintained, and the walk has a pleasant if slightly surreal quality — the knowledge that the strait is passing over your head while tankers move above gives it an unexpected psychological weight. At the Shimonoseki end, the Karato fish market is a five-minute walk away, offering fresh sashimi from a market that handles some of Japan's finest yellowtail and blowfish. The crossing makes a natural extension of a visit to the Mojiko Retro district.

A story
The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel was opened in 1958, making it one of the first underwater pedestrian tunnels in the world. At the midpoint of the 780-metre crossing, a painted line marks the prefectural boundary between Fukuoka and Yamaguchi — you can stand with one foot in Kyushu and one foot in Honshu. Cyclists are required to walk their bikes through; there is no cycling lane.
