Riverwalk Kitakyushu

Riverwalk Kitakyushu is a shopping and cultural complex on the bank of the Murasaki River, directly adjacent to Kokura Castle. The building — colourful, layered, and architectural distinctive — contains shops, restaurants, a cinema, and the Kitakyushu Art Museum annex. Its position next to the castle creates an interesting visual contrast between feudal and contemporary Kokura.

The mall is primarily of interest as an architectural curiosity and as a place to eat on a rainy day — the restaurant floors have a reasonable selection of Kitakyushu specialties including yakitori cooked over charcoal and the city's distinctive hormone-yaki. The riverside terrace in summer is pleasant. Combined with the castle gardens next door, the area makes a natural hub for exploring central Kokura.

A story
Riverwalk Kitakyushu was designed by Jon Jerde, the American architect responsible for the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas and various festival marketplaces around the world. Jerde's signature style — layered spaces, theatrical lighting, internal streets — was intended to recreate the sensation of wandering through a complex urban environment inside a single building. The result is odd by Japanese shopping centre standards: more chaotic, more European in feeling, and harder to navigate than the usual grid-layout mall.
