Bungo Kokubunji marks the site of the head temple of former Bungo Province. Few original buildings remain, but the grounds have markers showing where the main temple structures once stood.
The interest here is in the layout and the sense of an old provincial religious centre. Information boards with images help make the ruins easier to read.
