Funai Castle stood in the centre of Oita from the sixteenth century until the Meiji era, when most of its structures were dismantled. What remains is the moated castle park: stone walls, a turret, several gates, and a wide open green that is the city's main public space. The reconstructed Hakusan Yagura turret gives a sense of the original scale.
The site is a pleasant five-minute walk from Oita Station. Information boards (some in English) trace the castle's history from the Otomo clan through the Edo-period Funai domain to the modern park. Cherry blossoms make the moat especially photogenic in early April.
